Done with a mouse over the course of a month or so. Most of it was done on one layer, to make it a bit more challenging. First time in years since I digipainted something, I used to do oekaki's now and then so it's not quite the first time, however, I've never put so much effort in one image.
It's not quite perfect, mostly exploring the configuration and style, so rather than a finished detail design, this is more like an advanced, worked out concept design of the first draft I sketched a while ago. Obviously it still needs work if you want it to be fully transformable. I've got a few ideas on how to change some features of the design configuration, but I really don't have more time to spend on this so I didn't bother with that. (I've got commissions and possibly some official colouring work coming up, so... ).
Hooooowever, I heard Draven might be making a 3D model out of it if he finds the time, so any feedback regarding transformation would be appreciated for him to dig through for ideas.
So please feel free to leave crits and suggestions, however please take note that this is not supposed to fit in with current movie designs and that the style is supposed to mimic typical Transformers 'blockyness' without actually being blocky (plating instead of massive blocks.
Holy cheese, this is a painting?! At first glance it looked like a 3-D model to me.
It's kinda like a design combination of G1 and the Classics Prime, plus a lil of the movie design bendiness. Looks darn good to me and I'd be interested to see what his transformation sequence looks like to put everything together.
The only thing I'd tweak in design would be the thickness of his thighs.... he doesn't look terribly bulky, but his legs almost look too thin to hold him up. In my humble opinion.
Now thats what I call Optimus Prime. And I actually think his thighs add to his design aesthetic. They look strong enough to me ^_^
Mad, you should have been in there designing the TFs for this supposed movie over that idiot Alex whats his name from Star Wars....great pic of Prime. ^_^
This'll be a long answer (which Draven can use later too )
First off, this is based on a fantasy truck as I didn't have internet on holiday in Spain. Thus you'd have to adapt the design to a real flatnose truck that's remniscent of Optimus. Only a modern version, of course.
The basic transformation reminds a bit of the old school Prime, it's a bit different though and not quite like the Masterpiece either, as the cabin space is actually empty and thus you have to push the windows towards the back. I was thinking of having the matrix compartment underneath the dashboard. Most of this Prime's robot interior is hidden away in the aerodynamic top (head and back(pack)), the sleeping compartment (main interior of the body) and the engine (shifted towards the waist), with the shoulder at the sides of the sleeping compartment and the lower arms underneath the cabin's floor (hence the chairs). I was thinking the chairs would be better of on the underside of the arms though. The extra plating on the arms (lot of plating used) would come from an extra piece of plating, namely aerodynamic protection of the trailerconnection bits, also surrounding the smoke stacks. Obviously I haven't worked out the entire interior yet though. But the above is roughly how this would be done.
The crotch is formed by the front end bumper (rotates 180 degrees and folds together), where the outer most parts become parts that protect the joints beneath and can rotate with it (think MP Prime). The thigh joints are largely made up by the suspension of the truck. The upper legs are formed by parts from the backend of the truck and some bumper stuff.
One of the problems I encountered was that I couldn't find really good reference images of the sections that would become the legs. Virtually all truck images online are front/side views. :/ Which is kinda... problematic if you're trying to see what parts are all in there. Hence it's still a bit of guesswork there. The key features in the leg design at the moment are the double rotating tire section bits, the tires themselves and the plating that goes on the top or side of the backsection to form shin and knee protection. The ideas was that the feet would slide out of the internal section, rather than stick on the end like your typical Optimus. Also I might have switched the backend bits with the lights... Not sure on that one >.>
But these are things a design team should be able to work out and overcome, IMO. Obviously it would require some adapting of the design, but the overal style could remain.
THAT is sweet. Excellent blending of G1, Classics, and movie incarnations.
